2019 Tour de France Grand Départ (Brussels)

Brussels was chosen to host the start of the Tour de France in 2019. For the second time, the capital will receive the start of the Tour, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Tour victory of Eddy Merckx in 1969. The first stage on Saturday 6 July 2019 goes from Brussels via Charleroi back to Brussels. On Sunday 7 July 2019, there will be a team time trial in Brussels finishing at the Atomium.

The Tour of France is the third most viewed sporting event in the world and broadcast in 190 countries around the world. This is a unique opportunity, in addition to the sporting dimension, to promote the city, to put 'Brussels on the map'. But also to reveal the architectural, cultural and culinary heritage and to emphasize the cosmopolitan and open aspect in Europe.

Brussels already hosted the start of the Tour de France in 1958, the year of the World Exhibition. In 1969, the year of the first overall victory of Eddy Merckx, the Tour passed in Brussels as well. The last time was in 2010, with an arrival of a stage starting in Rotterdam, already in honor of Merckx. During that stage, the peloton rode along Meise, hometown of Merckx, before finishing at the Avenue Houba de Strooper.

Saturday 6 July - Brussels - Charleroi - Brussels - 192 km

After leaving Brussels via Molenbeek and Anderlecht, the peloton rides to the "Muur van Geraardsbergen", which was also part of the course of the first Tour of France of Eddy Merckx in 1969. From there it goes towards Charleroi and back to Brussels. The riders ride along the foot of the Lion of Waterloo, the battlefield where Napoleon and his troops suffered their defeat. In the final there is a passage in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, where the young Eddy started cycling... and where he also won his first ever yellow jersey.

Sunday 7 July - Brussels Royal Palace - Brussels Atomium - 28 km (team time trial)

The wide avenues of Brussels lend themselves to a demonstration of strength of the teams against the clock, with few turns and some slight slopes. The finish line is drawn at the Atomium.

Monday 8 July - Binche - Epernay - 214km

A stronghold of cycling, Binche notably welcomed a start of the Flèche Wallonne. After crossing the border, the riders will notice in the sequence of hills of the final 30 kilometres, climbs made for punchers. The Côte de Mutigny for instance could be a perfect launch pad for the most audacious.

Wednesday, July 3rd : Meeting point at Brussels international airport

  • 1 pm: meeting @ Brussels international airport and transfer to our hotel. Other meeting points and times on request.
  • After the check-in we will start with the fitting of our world-class rental bikes (BMC). For those bringing their own bikes, our staff will help to assist with assembling your bike.
  • 3 pm: Short ride (bike fitting)
 in the region.
  • Welcome dinner included.  The itinerary and the program for the following days will be explained.
  • The next 4 nights we will overnight in the Flanders-region.

Thursday, July 4th : Ride to the Tour of Flanders museum

  • This morning we’ll go for a ride on the "Tour of Flanders" route. The Tour of Flanders is one of the most prestigious of the Spring Classics races. Most of the climbs are narrow and steep and several are cobbled. They are all tough in their own way.
  • We will end our ride at Oudenaarde and visit the Tour of Flanders museum. The interactive museum is located in the historical heart of Oudenaarde. A visit consists of ten different themes. At your convenience there will be a museum guide. He will bring back alive all the cycling legends. You might even get a chance to meet one of them! It is all about the spirit and the heroes of the Tour. The museum has a multi-media approach with magnificent audiovisuals, projections and computersimulations. Every visitor gets the chance to experience the Tour himself. You can feel the excitement, the suffering and the happiness. You can cycle next to Schotte, Merckx or Museeuw and you can feel the cobbled stones and hills.

Friday, July 5th: ride to Bruges (sightseeing & visit brewery)

  • In the morning we take you along for a bike ride through the flat landscape of the Flemish polders. In comparison with our adventure of last saturday a calm and easy ride, unless the wind is our contestant today.
  • In the afternoon, everyone is free to discover Bruges. Bruges, the Venice of the North and the capital of West Flanders, is one of the most famous Belgian cities and by UNESCO in 2002 declared "World HeritageCity ". That same year, the residents of Bruges boasted the heritage, culture, history and art-historical patrimony, celebrating the title 'Cultural Capital of Europe'. Bruges is a rich city in every meaning of the word. Because of the long history there is much to tell about Bruges and its famous inhabitants like Jan Breydel, Pieter De Coninck, Jan van Eyck, Simon Stevin, … It’s thus not surprising that this city has a very high tourism rate. Tourists can discover breathtaking monuments, informative and interesting museums, city tours in horse carriages, boat tours on the famous canals of Bruges and a web of little streets to wander about. You’ will be able to discover the city after this interesting bike ride. You can't visit Blegium without visiting a local brewery.
  • We will get a guided tour in the brewery "Brugse Zot" and get to taste its different beers afterwards!

Saturday, July 6th: Stage 1 Tour de France "Brussels - Brussels"

  • We will leave the hotel by bike and intercept todays course to witness today's crucial stage at the Muur van Geraardsbergen (Wall of Geraardsbergen). The Muur van Geraardsbergen is a steep, narrow road with cobblestones in Geraardsbergen. It is also known as KapelmuurMuur-Kapelmuur or simply Muur. This climb is often part of the Tour of Flanders professional cycling race.
  • Afterwards we will transfer to our hotel in the Ardennes-region for the last 2 nights.
